ANSTO: Development in particle therapy for Cancer.

The Michael Tynan Challenge is happy to welcome ANSTO to its list of beneficiaries in 2021 for their amazing contributions to scientific advancements in Health through their world-class research centres.

Dr Mitra Safavi-Naeini (Senior Physicist and Research Lead, Human Health) explains the development of a radical new approach to particle therapy for cancer that was undertaken at ANSTO. Neutron capture enhanced particle therapy (NCEPT) delivers a one-two punch to cancer cells. Resulting in more accurate radiotherapy treatment for cancer patients, watch the full video here to see just how they do it.

The approach boosts the target dose without increasing the dose to healthy tissue and delivers a significant dose to secondary lesions outside the primary treatment area and was developed by a large team at ANSTO led by Dr Mitra Safavi Naeini, Imaging Quantification Research Leadin collaboration with University of Wollongong researchers.

Research such as this is exactly why we continue year after year to raise funds for medical research through our MTC events, groundbreaking technology and medicine that helps to deliver a more accurate treatment!

You can read more about NCEPT development from the ANSTO website here.
